Kolisi thanks Scotland for “amazing” welcome after victory

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi thanked Scotland for an amazing welcome and atmosphere at BT Murrayfield after his side beat Gregor Townsend’s men 30-15.

A double from winger Makazole Mapimpi helped the world champions edge Scotland despite Stuart Hogg crossing for two tries of his own.

The Springboks’ physicality helped them establish a grip on the game, powerhouse second row Eben Etzebeth winning Player of the Match and flanker Kolisi was effusive in his praise of their hosts.

South Africa outmuscle Scotland

He said: “The atmosphere has been amazing, there are so many South Africans that have come all the way to be here – that’s what this team means to the country.

“We take the responsibilities wherever we go, we take the pressure and privilege wherever we go. I’m grateful to be part of this team, to be part of this proud country.

“And thank you to the people of Scotland, they have been amazing to us in Edinburgh. They welcomed us and whenever we needed help they were always there and they were friendly to us so thank you so much.

“I thought Scotland were good today, it was a tight game as usual. I was so happy with the team to be able to stay disciplined and stay confident to keep on moving and scoring on the scoreboard.”

South Africa came from behind at half-time to win for the fourth time in 2021, and really exerted their physical dominance after going in 10-8 down at the break, something Kolisi suggested was part of the plan.

He added: “That was the whole aim of the game, they knew what we wanted to bring.

“I thought they got the edge in the first half, they got the game going fast but we were able to go back to what we know, making sure the kicks were contestable.

“But every time we carry we make sure we run into them as hard as we can, the physicality was always the ultimate thing for us and I’m so glad we were able to come through in the second half and bring it on.”
