Farrell excited by “massive talent” Marcus Smith

Owen Farrell has described Marcus Smith as a “massive talent” and pledged to help his fly-half rival fulfil his potential with England in the Autumn Nations Series.

The England skipper was full of praise for Smith, who joined him on the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa in the summer having won his first two international caps.

Farrell and Smith have yet to play together for England but the Harlequins star has been around Eddie Jones’ camps before and even roomed with Farrell previously.

And with the duo potentially set to link up in the Autumn Nations Series at fly-half and inside centre, Farrell is excited about what his younger counterpart will bring to England.

“He’s a massive talent and a very exciting player. We’ve worked together before, he’s been into camp before when he was a bit younger,” said Farrell.

“We shared a room together and things like that before, in the past, and it was good to get to know him a bit better over the summer.

“He is a brilliant lad and he’s not just a very talented player but a proper student of the game – and that sounds a bit cliche but I mean, he’s really bothered about getting better.

“He’s really bothered about understanding the game more and he loves chatting about rugby. So that made it easy for me to get on with him.

“He seems like he is confident because, for me, he has done the work. He understands the game and knows exactly what he wants to get out of it.

“When he speaks, he speaks sense and that obviously helps your confidence and helps when it comes to playing in the position he does. He is doing that really well at the minute.”

He added: “He’s someone that can unlock a game himself but got a brilliant eye for how to make a team work as well. So that sort of balance you want to make sure he keeps.

“He’s got the attitude that’ll do that for hopefully a long time. I’m happy to help wherever and obviously, Marcus loves talking rugby, loves chatting about the game.”
