What are the teams for Ireland v Fiji?

Ireland’s Tadhg Furlong Ireland

Ireland have never lost to the Flying Fijians and after their superb Autumn Nations Series win over South Africa, Andy Farrell’s men will be determined to keep building momentum.

The two sides have only met in four Test matches, the latest in 2017 the closest the Pacific Island nation have come to claiming victory.

Ian Keatley slotted two late penalties to clinch a 23-20 Autumn Internationals win with Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt naming a largely inexperienced starting XV that day.

Flying Fijian head coach Vern Cotter saw his team put in a fine first half performance last Saturday, heading into the interval 14-12 down against Scotland before slipping to a 28-12 defeat.

Farrell, meanwhile, was beaming after the world number ones edged the Springboks 19-16 at the Aviva Stadium last weekend.

Furlong to lead out Ireland against Fiji

Tadhg Furlong is the 109th player to captain Ireland as he makes his 62nd Test appearance for Ireland.

The prop is one of six players to retain their place from the win over South Africa, with Tadhg Beirne and Caelan Doris the other forwards lining up again.

While Furlong is not the first prop to captain his country, the last one to do so was Simon Best against Argentina in 2007.

Doris is shifted to blindside from No.8 as Jack Conan comes in and Jeremy Loughman will make his debut for Ireland at loosehead.

Cian Prendergast and Jack Crowley could also earn their first senior international caps from the replacements bench after starting matches in the Māori Series over the summer.

Also involved against the NZ Māori during the summer are starters Jimmy O’Brien, Stuart McCloskey, Loughman, Kieran Treadwell and Nick Timoney.

In the backs, Robbie Henshaw starts at outside centre and there is a fresh half-back combination with Jamison Gibson Park and Joey Carbery named scrum-half and fly-half respectively.

The wingers are unchanged, with Robert Baloucoune and Mack Hansen starting in the back three alongside O’Brien.

Tela and Wainiqolo in for stricken Murimurivalu and Botitu

Flying Fijians coach Vern Cotter has made three changes to the starting XV that lost 28-12 in Edinburgh last weekend.

Injuries to fly-half Vilimoni Botitu and full-back Kini Murimurivalu means a start for 31-year-old Teti Tela in the No. 10 jersey.

Try-scorer against Scotland, Setareki Tuicuvu shifts to full-back and young Toulon winger Jiuta Wainiqolo is named to start having not been involved last weekend.

The final alteration sees Isoa Nasilasila earn his fourth international cap at lock in place of Temo Mayanavanua who misses out on the clash against Ireland altogether.

Castres centre Adrea Cocagi could make his Flying Fijians debut at the age of 28, while Johnny Dyer returns having last played for Cotter’s Fiji in July 2021.

Wainiqolo’s new Toulon teammate Waisea Nayacalevu continues as captain after making his Fiji debut more than a decade ago.
