Sexton to lead Ireland as six uncapped players named in Autumn Nations Series squad

Johnny Sexton will captain Ireland for their Autumn Nations Series campaign, with Jacob Stockdale among those recalled.

Winger Stockdale missed almost all of last season because of an ankle injury and won the last of his 35 caps in July 2021.

However, he is back in the fold for Ireland’s upcoming matches against South Africa, Fiji and Australia at the Aviva Stadium.

Fellow flyer James Lowe is among those absent from Andy Farrell’s 37-player squad due to injury, alongside Iain Henderson, Keith Earls and Andrew Conway.

Centre Bundee Aki remains unavailable while he serves an eight-week suspension following a red card on club duty with Connacht last month, but in-form Stuart McCloskey has earned a recall and the likes of Hugo Keenan and Jamison Gibson-Park are included despite recent injuries.

The six uncapped players are Ciaran Frawley, Jeremy Loughman, Joe McCarthy, Calvin Nash, Jimmy O’Brien and Cian Prendergast, all of whom except Nash featured for the Ireland XV that played against the Maori All Blacks during their summer tour of New Zealand.

Ireland will play the Springboks for the first time in five years when Jacques Nienaber’s World Cup-winning side return to Aviva Stadium on Saturday 5th November in the first of three mouth-watering ties.

Fiji are next to visit Dublin and the Pacific Islanders are in town for the first time since 2017 on Saturday 12th November.

The Wallabies conclude the line-up, having last locked horns with Ireland in the summer of 2018 when Joe Schmidt’s side emerged 20-16 winners in Sydney.
