Italy name provisional squad ahead of Autumn Nation Series

Italy head coach Kieran Crowley has announced a 35-man squad for their upcoming Autumn Nation Series matches including four uncapped players.

Gli Azzurri are set to face Samoa, Australia and South Africa this Autumn and there is a mixture of familiar faces and new names in Crowley’s squad.

Fly-half duo Tommaso Allan and Paolo Garbisi are among those included in the squad, joined in their position by Leonardo Marin, who has played most of his Test rugby in the centres.

Garbisi’s younger brother Alessandro is also included in the squad among the scrum-halves while another set of brothers – second row Niccolo Cannone and flanker Lorenzo Cannone – have also been selected.

Lorenzo, alongside fellow flanker Luca Andreani, centre Enrico Lucchin and lock Gabriele Venditti are all uncapped and could be in line to make their international debuts.

Captain Michele Lamaro and Sebastien Negri are among the other flankers in the squad, while Crowley will also be able to draw on the experience of centre Luca Morisi and winger Edoardo Panovani.

Luca Bigi and Montanna Ioane are also in the squad, the latter included after his move to Australia in the summer. Italy will look to build on summer victories over Portugal and Romania, as well as their Guinness Six Nations win over Wales back in March.

The 35-strong squad will join together for a six-day camp in late October in Verona ahead of their three Autumn Nation Series matches, with an official squad announced on 29th October.

Italy will begin their campaign against Samoa on 5th November, with their matches against Australia and South Africa taking place over the following two weekends.

Crowley said: “The Verona gathering will be the beginning of our international window in November. We look forward to working hard to re-establish and build our foundation to give us a good foundation as we prepare to face three formidable opponents.

“We have a squad with four rookies and a growing base at our disposal. One of our main challenges will be the consolidation of our identity: it will be an important step to face all the matches in November.”
