Argentina paid for their inability to take their chances according to coach Mario Ledesma after falling to defeat to France in Paris.

Los Pumas pushed France hard before falling away in the final quarter of the game as they eventually went down 29-20.

And against a team as strong as Les Bleus, Ledesma admitted his side could not afford to let opportunities slip after twice seeing his team held up in the in-goal area at the Stade de France.

He said: “Our players put in a lot of effort. We created several opportunities. I have three in my mind where we unfortunately did not score. Unfortunately against a team like France, that is costly come the end of the game. Above all, we did not always stick to the strategy that we had put in place during the week.

“Despite everything, we did more than compete against France. Could we have won? I think we need to do more and be better to win this type of game. To win, we have to take our chances.”

While Argentina did not come out on the winning side, they put France under huge pressure for large parts of the Autumn Nations Series fixture.

Fabien Galthié had chosen to start both Matthieu Jalibert and Romain Ntamack together for the first time but the gambit did not really pay off as Argentina’s defensive pressure denied them the space to flourish.

That was part of the plan for Ledesma, but he admitted that his team did not stick to their tactics throughout and paid the price at the breakdown.

He added: “We played too much in our own half, where France have a number of players who are very good at contesting the breakdown. In fact, we’ve never lost as much ball at the breakdown as we did in this match.

“Our plan was to disrupt France in the rucks so that the three world-class players, Dupont, Jalibert and Ntamack could not play the game they wanted.”
