Ioane to make Italy debut against Wales

Monty Ioane will make his eagerly-awaited Italy debut in the Autumn Nations Cup on Saturday, in one of two changes for the trip to Wales.

The Benetton winger became eligible last month and slots in on the left wing, with Franco Smith reshuffling his back three.

Jacopo Trulla shifts from the right wing to full-back, while Luca Sperandio swaps wings to make space for Ioane – who is the nephew of former Australia winger Digby Ioane.

In Italy’s other change, Stephen Varney replaces Marcello Violi at scrum-half for the trip to Llanelli, where the winner will finish fifth in the inaugural Autumn Nations Cup.

Italy have enjoyed a mixed campaign, losing narrowly to Scotland, seeing their match against Fiji postponed and then losing heavily to France in Paris.

“We want to end the tournament in the best possible way,” said Smith.

“We have a new opportunity to be able to take the field and try to show our worth. Wales are an experienced team and need no introduction. The focus must be on our performance.”
