Williams: We gave it everything but need to improve

Scrum-half Lloyd Williams says he saw an improvement in Wales’ display despite falling to a disappointing 24-13 defeat to England in the Autumn Nations Cup.

The hosts got off to a positive start at Parc y Scarlets with centre Johnny Williams crossing over after Dan Biggar’s charge down, but tries from Henry Slade and Mako Vunipola, in addition to four Owen Farrell penalties, secured victory for England.

And despite falling to a seventh defeat in eight games, Williams is optimistic that Wales can take plenty from the contest.

“The boys are disappointed but that was certainly an improvement,” Wales scrum-half Lloyd Williams said.

“We knew how hard a task this would be. We gave it everything and defended hard, but it wasn’t enough.

“It’s important we improve and work on our game for next weekend.”

The defeat ensured Wales finish third in Group A meaning they will face Italy next week, as it stands.

Head coach Wayne Pivac said he was impressed with the energy levels in Llanelli and believes a number of his players will have “big futures” at international level.

“We were pretty happy with the energy we bought,” Pivac said.

“Defensively we fought really hard considering we were up against it in terms of territory and possession.

“There were a lot of young guys having a good game against the second best team in the world. They would have learned a lot today and we’ve learned a lot about those people that could have big futures in the game.

“[On facing Italy next week] We just talked about it in the changing room and we need to build on these performances and finish on a high.”
