Maitland and Hidalgo-Clyne added to Scotland squad

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend is looking forward to having Sean Maitland and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne back in camp after adding the pair to the group ahead of the start of the Autumn Nations Cup.

Exeter Chiefs scrum-half Hidalgo-Clyne is the only new addition from Townsend’s original autumn selection at the start of October but back-three star Maitland is welcomed back to the group after being banished from the squad for his role in the breach of Covid protocol while on Barbarians duty.

That meant the 32-year-old was unavailable for Scotland’s Six Nations finale last weekend, where they beat Wales away from home for the first time in 18 years, but is now in contention for the Pool B clash with Italy on November 14 to kick off their inaugural Autumn Nations Cup campaign.

Meanwhile, Hidalgo-Clyne is fresh off an English Premiership and European Rugby Champions Cup double with Exeter Chiefs in recent weeks, joining his club teammates Stuart Hogg, Jonny Gray and Sam Skinner in the Scotland camp.

Townsend faces a fly-half dilemma with Finn Russell and Adam Hastings both sustaining injuries that will rule them out for the rest of the autumn in the Wales victory last weekend but the head coach sees it as an opportunity for the updated squad.

Townsend said: “It’s obviously disappointing to lose two quality players like Finn and Adam, who had both been playing well.

“However, this provides an opportunity to other players come into the team and lead our attack. The squad adapted well at the weekend to the enforced changes and we have belief in those in our squad that can step up to play at stand-off.

“We welcome Sam Hidalgo-Clyne into camp after a successful time with Exeter Chiefs and he will add further competition at scrum-half.”

Meanwhile, Glasgow Warriors trio Richie Gray, Rob Harley and Ratu Tagive have all been released back to their club.
